Aimee
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 09:38AM Last night I photographed my good friend Aimee Braun for another test run with raw. I do have to say that I am having some really bad noise problems, anyone have any suggestions? I shot it in raw only, no raw + large jpeg! Scary! Here are the favorites...

Lauren,
I really enjoy your work. Your relationship with your clients shines through all your images. Your use of light and location is always so perfect.
Are you having issues with noise in only your RAW images? Are you using Lightroom for you conversions? If so, I am guessing it may be an issue with how the black and fill sliders are set. I would be happy to elaborate if I can help. Drop me an e-mail if you would like.
I've noticed the same thing in RAW. When shooting in JPEG the camera processes the file and reduces noise when it resizes it. With RAW, you are keeping the real deal, all the data from the file is there. Which, in my opinion, is worth it to have that flexibility later on. But the downside is that noise reduction is left undone. Have you heard of Noise Ninja. It works well, I've only had to use it a couple times to save really important shots. Your work looks great, keep it up! We need more Midwest photogs to represent!
Umm Lauren, AMAZING! Aimee, you are one hot mom!!! You look great! But it's also that amazing heart that shines through for the both of you, one behind the camera and in front. Lauren, when can I come play? ;)
I just bought a noiseware product from imagenomic it's won all kinds of awards. I did a little research and found out that this program is easier to use than Noise Ninja. You can go to there site and download a test version to see if you like it. http://www.imagenomic.com It operates in photophop as filter or you can download their action sets. Right now I'm just running it manually. I also bought the Portraiture. Take a look!
Lauren these are absolutely beautiful, SHE is beautiful!! Love the hat ones!
Hey Lauren, I was having the same problems and just as Beth stated I just bought the new software from imagenomic, i bought the bundle they offer, but it has worked great on the noise, I would highly recommend it. I also love the Portraiture as well.
I know you nail your exposure, but slight underexposure shows a lot of noise. By all means Imagenomic! You can achieve that plastic Barbie Doll look with the portraiture plug in. That is Heather's favorite. But she does love the Pro Retouch you introduced her to at the workshop! LOL!
#4 is my fave! Super cute!
they look wonderful Lauren.. :)
Beautiful Pictures!!! Aimee is a Super Nanny by day and Super Model by night!!!
Hi Lauren! (my first comment... YAY!) I'm your neighbor... well, sort of... I'm from Denver City, TX but currently living in Stuttgart Germany. (My husband is active duty U.S Air Force.) Anyhow, you're shooting with a 5D, right?! Double check your 'picture style' settings and make sure you're shooting with your sharpness on 0. Also be extra careful in acr that you're not adding any sharpening. This happened to me too and I was freaking out. I hope this helps. :)

Hey lauren... Are you shooting the RAW images at the same normal ISO settings you'd be shooting your JPEGs at? If so, the noise you are seeing was there in either one - it's just getting ironed out by software in the JPEG and not in the RAW. Just ramp up noise reduction a bit when your process your RAW to TIFF or JPEG or whichever you're going to leave it in.
Hi Lauren,
I run Noise Ninja (a stand alone program and a plug-in) which does a fantastic job of removing noise on all of my images as the very first thing I do after converting it from raw (I use Bridge and Camera Raw which I think does a great job). The final thing that I do after all manipulation is resize the image for the specific output and then run smart sharpen (included photoshop filter) on each image. This is the process which has worked for me and I have always been very happy with the results - even for images shot at a very high iso.

Someone is a very lucky man!
It does help to overexpose your images slightly when using raw. I do believe the benefits are worth it. Good luck!
I'll second lisa - exposure slightly over, or spot on is key. Shadow areas tend to be noisy if lightened too much.
Keep up the RAW! It really is worrth it!
